Venue : CGS Meeting Room, UniMAP
Speaker : Prof. Dr. P. Kalpana Devi
In today’s rapidly evolving communication landscape spanning defense operations, disaster response, and critical infrastructure, resilience and adaptability are paramount. Software-Defined Radio (SDR) has emerged as a transformative technology, offering multi-standard support and dynamic reconfiguration to meet the demands of modern strategic environments. Notwithstanding, the computational intensity of real-time signal processing in SDR systems presents significant challenges.
The sharing explored the integration of Reconfigurable Computing, with a focus on Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), as a powerful solution to enhance SDR architectures. By leveraging parallel processing and hardware-level customization, FPGAs enable SDR platforms to achieve lower latency, higher throughput, and real-time adaptability to fluctuating communication conditions. Through a series of case studies, the session demonstrated the architectural models, implementation strategies, and operational use cases across domains such as military communications, electronic warfare, and emergency response. Attendees gained insights into the benefits and limitations of reconfigurable computing in SDR systems, and how this convergence is poised to redefine the next generation of intelligent, adaptive communication platforms.
